Life as I Remember It: My Wedding Ring

Jumping ahead quite a bit in my life I know, but this is a story that recently became fresh in my mind as one of the ladies I work with had quite the traumatic moment regarding her wedding ring this week in class.  This event made me recall the story of my ring and just how heartbroken I truly would be if anything bad happened to it.  Yes I know that everyone out there has a special bond with the ring that symbolizes the vows made on that special day to the one you love, BUT mine has a greater meaning to me and Bill than just what it represents.  Let me tell you why...

Bill was fresh home from war when we (really I gave him an ultimatum, I had waited a year for him after all... the least he could do is marry me) decided to plan a quick wedding.  We had already committed to purchasing a home together so really getting married was only appropriate (in my mind anyway).  Due to our quick decision (and my demanding ways) to marry, I didn't get a proposal.  I was okay with that.  As a result to not getting a proposal, Bill decided that I would not see my ring until we said our I Do's.  I was okay with that too.  Bill and I were married within 5 weeks of his return so the wedding itself was very small.  Talk about those 5 weeks will have to wait for another post... Back to the ring story.

Bill and his Dad headed off to the Mall one afternoon (I want to say within the first week Bill was home) to scope out rings.  Bill had a general idea of the style of ring I wanted, but also had some ideas in mind that he liked himself.  He was very particular in what he was looking for really because he wanted to find something that incorporated both of our ideas.  I'm not certain where all they looked, or how long they looked for I just know that he found what he was looking for.  As he and his dad sat discussing rings, of course the topic of "how are you going to propose" came up.  Bill's response was I'm not.  He told the ladies in the jewelry store that he had just returned from overseas and that how our marriage plans came to be.  That conversation then led to one about war, his experiences, and of course their appreciation for his sacrifices for our freedoms.  All the while there was an older gentleman in the store along with Bill and his Dad that was discussing watch repairs with one of the other workers.  This store is quite small and everyone's conversations with one another really are easily overheard.  Conversations of military and war relations continued throughout the entire purchasing process.  Bill completed the basic paperwork and put a down payment down on my ring.  In an attempt to surprise, but opted to only put a down payment down rather than making the complete purchase to ensure that the element of surprise with me still existed (we did share a bank account after all and he didn't want me to know quite yet what the cost was going to be).  Once the sale was completed Bill and his Dad walked down to the little coffee joint that sat next to the Nordstrom's entrance at the time, grabbed a coffee, and sat to talk awhile.  After having sat there chatting for about 15 minutes Bill's phone rang.  The call came in from the jewelry store and the sales lady was crying.  She explained to Bill that he needed to come back to the store to complete the final purchase work on the ring.  Confused, Bill complied and headed back to the the jewelry store.  Upon arrival, he noticed that all the ladies in the store were in tears.  They told Bill that they needed to finalize all the paperwork because someone had paid off the remaining balance on my ring.  As it turns out, this someone was that gentleman who was having his watch repaired.  He overheard Bill's conversation of war and how he had just returned.  He overheard our story and the difficulties that war brought to our life and how Bill's time away brought us to the realization that marriage was our next step.  This gentleman asked the jewelry store to keep his name anonymous as he wasn't giving us this gift as a way to be in the spotlight.  He just wanted to offer a simple Thank You to Bill for his service for our country.  This gentleman explained to these ladies that he too had gone to war, Vietnam, and no one ever thanked him for his sacrifices and he wanted to make sure that Bill knew that there was at least one person out there grateful for him putting his life on the line for our freedoms.  He wanted to make sure that I knew that there was someone out there thankful for being the person worrying from home as the love of my life was thousands of miles away in harms way every single day.

Soon after leaving the jewelry store Bill called me and told me about what happened.  I cried and he cried.  I can't even begin to describe how much a simple thank you means to Bill when he gets them, but this act of gratitude was far more than we had ever anticipated.  There are no words to describe how thankful we are for this man and the kindness he showed us.  I know that those who came home from Vietnam weren't as fortunate to be offered even a handshake as a thank you for what they went through.  If I could, I would wrap my arms around this man and thank him for his sacrifices as well, and thank him for giving us the most wonderful and memorable thank you of our lives.

I proudly wear my ring, my symbol of the vows made on my wedding, and the constant reminder of one man's appreciation for my husbands sacrifices.  My ring holds great meaning for Bill and I... It symbolizes far more than what most wedding rings symbolize.  I am grateful for it and look forward to passing this story and my ring onto my children.

Life as I Remember It: A tad bit from my baby books...

No, I haven't forgotten about my blog series... I've just been taking a little time to learn a few things about myself is all.

I'm not sure why, but I have two baby books.
Maybe one was lost momentarily so Mom had to replace it and then the lost one was rediscovered at a later time?
Or maybe Mom just loved me so much that she felt the need to spend her valuable time updating not one, but two books with all the wonderful things about me?
(I like to think it's the second of the two)

I really appreciate my mom's efforts to keep as much documented about me as she did.  I learned a lot about myself through these two little books.

As I read through these books I had to giggle at the "World as it was when Our Baby was Born" page...
So much has changed from that time and it really put it into perspective just how old I am.
From the "Olden Days" as my sweet Brenna once put it.

When I was born...

President: Ronald Reagan

Latest Dance: New Wave, Punk Rock

Popular Songs: "Nobody"- Sylvia (who is that exactly?) and "Mountain Music"- Alabama

Popular T.V. Shows: Knots Landing, Hill Street Blues... WHAT are those?

Popular Entertainers: Barbara Mandrell (who?), David Brenner (Huh?), Olivia Newton John (FINALLY, one I know!)

Fashions/Fads: Mini skirts (not much has changed there), Tight skirts, tuxedo blouses (who says blouses anymore?), designer jeans, Wide waist belts (AND THEY'RE BACK!), Women's neckties (didn't they come back too for a minute?), Front pleat pants.

Hit Movies: "E.T", "Mr. Mom", "Flashdance" (Really?), "Man from Snowy River"

Big Names in Sports: McEnroe- Tennis (Since when was tennis a popular sport? Only in the 80's!) and Richard Petty- cars (I'm assuming nascar... not the movie.)

My first doctor's exam was on May 20th, 1983 at 7 days old...
According to my books, the examination findings were this:

"A+ BEAUTIFUL (but of course I was!), enjoyable temperament.  Storks bite on forehead and granuloma on belly button.  Treated with silver nitrate to shrink it.  Slightly jaundice, but otherwise perfectly healthy."

What is a granuloma you ask?
gran·u·lo·ma/ˌgranyəˈlōmə/
Noun: A mass of granulation tissue, typically produced in response to infection, inflammation, or the presence of a foreign substance.

I actually had this weird hanging thingy in my belly button my whole life.  I had an innie and an outie.  When I had my hysterectomy, my awesome doctor did some plastic surgery for me for free.  I seriously asked about having this thing removed several times with several different doctors and was told it was cosmetic so it wouldn't be covered by insurance.  Funny how when you are buddy buddy with your OB they will help you out with these small cosmetic imperfections.  He cut it out and stitched up my belly button and now it looks normal.

A few more things about me...

My first word: Dada (imagine that!) at 5 months.
I smiled immediately.
Rolled over at 3 1/2 months.
Slept through the night at 2 weeks (now that's an awesome baby)!
In my first appointment at one week I weighed 6lbs 5oz (lost 5oz from birth).
My first tooth was bottom, front, left... cut through on 11-26-83 (6 1/2 months).
Sit up alone- 4 months
Fav. Foods: Bananas, carrots, sweet potatoes, cream of wheat, garden vegetables, dutch apple dessert
Fav. Games: Patt- a-cake, Peek-a-Boo, Pony Boy
Fav. song: I Love you Bushell and a Peck
First Giggle was on July 20th (2 1/2 months)
I loved blankets with silk bindings.
Delivery doctor was supposed to be James Brinton, but as stated in my previous post I was delivered by nurses.
My pediatrician was Dr. Keith Clayton
I was named after my beautiful Aunt Kelly (both our middle names are Marie).
Mom says I sure loved my big sister Jaime...

My home address when I was born was:
2149 No. 1060 W.
Provo, UT 84604

My books talk a bit more about other favorites and firsts...
Like holidays and birthdays.
Gifts I got and toys I loved.

Thanks mom for the documentation of all these things about me!

Life As I Remember It: I was Born

My second post of my blog series: Recap of the day I was born.

Friday, May 13, 1983
Started off as an average morning in May for Mom and Dad.
Dad headed off to work, and Mom headed off to Grandma and Grandpa's with big sister Jaime for some much needed R&;R after a long night of false labor the night before (where they gave her a shot of morphine and sent her home).
My pleasantly medicated mother (remaining from the night before of course) slept the day away on the couch while Grandma and Jaime went about their day.
Small contractions presented themselves again that morning, but though Mom noticed, she was able to sleep through them.
She slept so well, that she in fact (as mentioned before) she literally slept the day way...

Suddenly,
Mom jumps up from her sleep at
A Quarter to 3pm
(For those time challenged, that's 2:45pm HA!)
and insisted she was going into labor...
Grandma had just put big sister Jaime down for a nap and was enjoying her afternoon soap operas.
There was only 15 minutes left of her show, "Can you wait 15 minutes Kath? The show is almost over and I just laid Jaime down for a nap."
Labor could wait right?
HA!
Mom insisted she was going to wait in the car because I was coming, regardless how close the show was to being over.
Grandma decided she had better listen...
Grandma woke Jaime from her nap and quickly loaded her up in the car where mom was waiting.
Good thing the hospital was close...

When they arrived at the hospital, the nurses wheeled in a wheel-chair for mom to sit in and take her to a room.  Mom refused, I was crowning. She couldn't possibly SIT!  Poor mom waddled her way through the hospital where they finally found a stretcher for mom to lay on in a crowded hallway.
(All the while Grandma was downstairs checking mom in and making the call to Dad to let him know that the baby was coming)

Unfortunately for mom, if she was ever embarrassed of being fully exposed to dozens of strangers she was just going to have to suck it up.

Hospital picture
(Obviously I was embarrassed by my big floppy ears from birth)

I was born in that hallway, with an audience, delivered by nurses at 2:59pm.
(one minute before Grandma's soap opera was over... So much for labor can wait!)
Those who were important in Mom's life (Grandma and Dad) missed the birth, but that's okay right?  Because dozens of people got to bear witness to the welcoming of a new life to the world.
Ha Ha Ha!
Dad didn't believe it when he got the call that I had made my appearance.  Hadn't it only been minutes since he got the call to head over to the hospital because Mom was in labor???

I've been told I am a slight over achiever,
Clearly the day I was born was no exception to my over achieving tendencies.
Aw, I love you too...

See what I'm saying about those ears?
Gnarly right?

Life as I Remember It: Meet the Parents

Before I can post about the day I was born...
(Not something I REMEMBER, but I  have a pretty good understanding of how my entrance into this world was made)

I must tell you a little about the two people who gave me life.
My Mother and My Father
My Strength and My Rock
My Comfort and My Encouragement
My Cheerleaders and My Best Friends
Kathy and Jim

I owe my life to them,
For that I will forever be indebted to them.
No Thank You could ever be enough...
.
.
.

They were both born and raised in New York, Not the city.
Youngstown, Ransomville area.
If you've ever been to that part of the country you will know that it is BEAUTIFUL.
I've only been there very few times myself, but I love everything about the place they call home.

My Daddy
My Dad was born on a day in January.
(Not going to age drop on my Dad, year of birth shall remain unknown)
He is the oldest of 4.
Two Boys, Two girls.
From what I understand he has always been their rock.
Big Brother Jimmy,
They know they can always count on him, Turn to him in times of need. Trust him with their life.
The best kind of brother anyone could ever have...
My Dad and his sisters... (couldn't find one with his brother Jeff in it)
He's just that kind of guy...
Tough when he needs to be, but the softest most tender heart imaginable.
A Protector.  A Knight in Shining Armor. A Safe Haven.
He would give his shirt off his back to anyone in need.
He is driven, hard-working, focused, successful, and SO fun to be with.
He is a friend for life kind of guy with an abundance of people who love him and are honored to call him a friend.
I know I am lucky to have him and I cherish every day I spend with him.
I like to think my dad has always been the model son, friend, brother, student and father... though I am sure he too had his moments. ;)

My Mommy
My mom, her parents, siblings, and the first born grandchild
My Mom was born on a January day as well..
(Again, year will not be disclosed)
She is the second to the oldest of 4.
Three girls, one boy.
People say I look just like her, with the exception of my dad's eyes and dimples...
I can't argue that, but that's okay because my mom is stunning.

She is successful, strong, and giving.
She made a life for us despite the downfalls and challenges she was dealt.
She too is a Daddy's girl like myself.
She wears her heart on her sleeve and is completely satisfied just knowing that she is loved.
My mom is fun, silly, and really sensitive.
She's an amazing daughter, sister, mother, and friend.
Her loyalty is one of a kind.
I know my mother has made my grandparents proud with all she has achieved in life,
as am I.

My parents met by way of my grandmother.  My father worked at the same grocery store my grandmother worked at.  I don't know all the details, I only know that my grandma really liked my dad (but of course who wouldn't) and so she introduced him to my mom.
Clearly, things worked out.

I found this picture attached to a newspaper article announcing their engagement
It read:
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph T. Sykes of 377 Brampton Road, Youngstown, announce the  engagement of their daughter, Kathy Lynn Sykes, to James Robert Lynch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lynch of 3600 Ransomville Road, Ransomville.  A spring wedding is planned.
I don't know their engagement story, or much of about their dating life.  What I do know is this;
They were young,
Fresh out of high school.
They were in love.

They married, I'm sure in the spring of 1979.
Surrounded by friends and family.
Next came the babies...

Introducing: Life as I Remember It....

So I was going through some boxes yesterday, just trying to get a little organized.
I came across my little box of keepsakes that my mom had kept for me.  It contains memorabilia throughout my entire life.
Report cards, awards, cards, letters, baby books, milestones of my life, school work.
You know those things that make a parent proud or life moments they want to remember.  I have boxes for my children that consist of much of the same type of stuff.
I value what my mom kept for me, and I want to provide the same for my children.  From this moment I am going to kick it up a notch...
Every year on my child's birthday I will write them a letter.  Something for them to read when they are an adult, so they will always remember the pride they gave me throughout their life.

While going through my box of keepsakes, I was hit with an overwhelming amount of memories from my childhood.  Things that I realized I have come to forget about over time.  This made me realized that I am not getting any younger and the more years that go by, the more I am going to forget my childhood.

I don't want to forget.
I want to keep what memories I have left.
Those moments shaped me, those moments define me.
I don't ever want to lose ME!
I have already forgotten so much...
I refuse to forget anymore.

I want to be able to share those memories with my children, and when I am gone my children can share my Life as I Remember It with their children too.

Which is why I am introducing to you....

Life as I Remember It
A blog series

Starting from Birth.

I hope for this little series to consist of not only memories of my own, but those of my family as well.  Moments of my life that made my parents proud... or even sad.
Moments of my life that I shared with my siblings... some bad, many good.
I hope you will follow with me on my journey back through time.
